Installing CCTV is not as easy a task as many would presume. However, the installation procedure can easily affect the functionality of the CCTV. Below is an extract with some expert tips on installing CCTV in your home or commercial premises.

Choose the Right Cameras

Each type of CCTV camera has a specific use. Therefore, examine your property to determine which cameras suit you best. For instance, internal CCTV cameras are best suited for indoor locations. If you installed them outdoors, they could suffer weather damage. If you need outdoor cameras, consider external CCTV cameras with a weather-resistant casing and heated lenses. You also need to check the camera's range of vision. A camera with a 360-degree view covers a wide area. However, you should assess the camera's resolution to ensure it gives a crisp image. 

Deciding on an Installation Location

Where will you install the cameras? Ideally, you do not need to cover the entire property with CCTV cameras if you do not consider yourself to be at significant risk. Typically, the CCTV cameras should cover the perimeter and entrance points. This way, you can easily track anyone who enters the premises. When installing outdoor cameras, think about their range of view. For instance, does it have adequate lighting? If not, you should consider lighting up the area or purchase CCTV cameras with night vision capabilities. Does the site have any obstructions? It could be a tree, an HVAC compressor, or a door. Think about how you can deal with these obstacles. For example, you could remove the obstacles or place them higher. 

Check local laws and strata by-laws when installing the cameras. Typically, you should ensure that the cameras do not face your neighbouring property. Otherwise, your neighbour's could accuse you of infringing on their privacy. Finally, evaluate the safety of the cameras. For example, outdoor cameras should be installed several meters above the ground to prevent malicious individuals from damaging or interfering with them.  

Be Cautious With Cabling 

If you opt for a wired CCTV system, you should be cautious with the cabling. Ideally, use high-quality cables such as Cat5E. These cables can transmit large and high-quality data within a short period. Moreover, examine your home's wiring and sockets to prevent fire risks and short-circuiting the cameras after installation. Consider incorporating a backup battery pack to keep the CCTV functional when you have a power outage. 

When installing CCTV cameras, choose suitable cameras, decide on an installation location, and be cautious with cabling. As an operating principle, hire an experienced CCTV installation professional.
